Establish safe spaces

Learning and innovation can happen at any level. Even the most junior person in the team should feel that their contributions are valued and should feel comfortable expressing ideas and asking questions of senior members of the team. For this reason, nurturing psychological safety should be imperative within teams. Conscious efforts should be taken to establish ground-rules to ensure all participants can contribute without feeling judgement, belittlement or marginalisation.

  • Do you establish ground rules for meetings that encourage openness and set aside traditional hierarchies?
  • Are dissenting views sought-out in meetings?
  • Do junior members of the team speak up and challenge conventional wisdom and/or senior colleagues?
